No plans for 2025 Black History Month celebration? Let us and ASALH help you!
If you left it up to the American educational system, one would think Dr. Martin Luther King was the only Black person worth teaching about. For so many years, especially while I was in elementary, middle and high school, Black History month was synonymous with Dr. Martin Luther King. We really didn't talk about anyone else, well maybe Harriet Tubman. Black History Month, for so many of us, was always about the past and without a conscious effort, many of us in #corporateamerica are still leading Black History month in our organizations with a focus on past achievements of Black Americans, but Black History Month is more than just the past.
If we're going to celebrate Black History Month (BHM) let's be intentional about it! Most of us know that Black History Month, began in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” established by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). By 1976, it expanded into a month-long celebration, providing a platform to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans while reflecting on the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.
Each year, ASALH makes it easy for all of us to celebrate BHM and focus on different aspects of the Black experience by selecting a theme to spotlight key aspects of the Black experience and inspire actionable change. These themes connect historical milestones to contemporary challenges and opportunities, reminding us that BHM isn’t just about reflecting on the past but also about shaping the future. The theme for Black History month 2025 is "African Americans and Labor".
Curious what the past 5 year themes were? Here you go:
- 2024: Black Resistance - Highlighting the long standing fight against systemic oppression.
- 2023: Black Health and Wellness - Honoring the legacy of Black medical practitioners and addressing health inequities.
- 2022: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity - Exploring the rich histories and cultural expressions of Black families.
- 2021: The Crisis in Black Education - Addressing the need for equitable access to quality education.
- 2020: African Americans and the Vote - Marking the centennial of the 19th amendment and the struggle for voting rights.
These themes underscore that Black history is not confined to textbooks or museums. It is a living legacy—fueling conversations, inspiring initiatives, and empowering communities year after year. ASALH makes it easy for us to really dive into BHM each year. These themes offer value and a deeper appreciation of the contributions Black Americans have made to society.
As we move into 2025, let’s engage with this year’s 2025 Black History Month theme "African Americans and Labor" and honor the spirit of resilience, innovation, and determination that continues to define Black history. Together, we can transform awareness into action, celebrating Black excellence not just in February, but every day.
